WELCOME

Yay! You’ve booked your session!
I’m excited to come and capture the magic that is you and your family

First and foremost, thank you!

Thank you for trusting me to take these fleeting moments in your life and keep them still in time through photographs. There is nothing I love more than being behind the camera capturing everything that matters most to you. I am forever grateful you have chosen to work with me. As I mentioned in the pricing guide, my focus with family photography is creating images that embody who you and your family are. Your connections, your heart, your little ones tiny hands wrapped around you, your joy as a family. The real and raw moments. I want your children to see love when they look back on these when they are adults.

The goal of this guide is to give you all the tools and information you need for a successful session. I’m all about keeping it simple, so most importantly, don’t stress. So, with all that being said, all of this information can be taken with a grain of salt. Not every family is the same. I want to work with you to create a session that is 100% “you” and makes you feel at ease. If at any point, something is uncomfortable or forced, we will move on or take a small break. I don’t have an exact format or template for these sessions, and many times they pave their own way.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Be Yourself.

Yeah, I know, easier said than done with some lady pointing a camera at you. But honestly, what I really ask is that you really allow yourself to be just that--yourself. I’m not here to make judgments; I’m here to capture your family. Don’t be afraid to love on your babies or your partner as if no one else was there. I want you to laugh wildly, snuggle tightly, slide your fingers affectionately through their hair, tell them how much you love them, and keep connecting with your family each and every moment. Allow yourself to be in the moment as much as possible and enjoy the experience. Silliness and laughter are always welcome, because like I said before, we will have fun! While we are together, all rules are off the table. I am going to say and do things to make this as enjoyable for your children as much as possible. If I have to whisper potty words or make money sounds to help your children relax or laugh, that’s what I’ll do!. Please let me do my thing and trust that I will get what you want. You get a rare hour or so when you can relax and hand the reins over to me. Have FUN and simply take the time to enjoy your family

 Location

We have two general options for the location of your shoot: in your home or at an outdoor location. Both of these options are beautiful and you should make the choice based on what you’re hoping to get out of your images.

I’m a big advocate of in-home sessions, I believe they are very uniquely you and allow for you to be comfortable and genuine in front of the camera. I’m a firm believer that this is the place you’ll remember your family being together, leaving you with photographs that will stand the test of time. If you decide you would like to do something on-location, that’s fine too! I love locations that are unique to your family or if you see one I’ve used I’m happy to take you there - just ask!

In-home

There can be nothing more comfy and carefree than shooting a family in their own home. Just imagine your kids jumping on your bed while you come in with your partner to all collapse in the blankets and pillows in a heap of laughter, cuddles, and tickles! An in-home session often allows children to relax more and gives space for the family pet to photobomb as much as possible! I can capture you reading stories, making pancakes, having a kitchen dance party, or just hanging out together. The options are endless. The best time of day for an indoor shoot is morning to midday, so please keep that in mind if you are working around schedules.

Outdoors

I love outdoor sessions purely for the opportunity to take advantage of the most beautiful lighting. I truly believe in the transformational power of beautiful sunlight. I understand that having your children up early for sunrise, or having them stay up late for sunset, may affect their mood and sleep schedule slightly, but it has always been worth it. For outdoor sessions, we can discuss a variety of options that match you and your family’s personality best. Do you like going for walks in the woods, or enjoying picnics in a meadow? Does your family love the water and are you all willing to jump in?  Some of my favorite places to shoot are a field of tall grass, a farm, the beach, an apple orchard, or a field of flowers! Let’s discuss your ideas!

A little of both!

Can’t decide if you want an in-home or outdoor session? Have a nice back yard or a beautiful field near your house? We can do both!  For these types of sessions, it’s best to start in your home late afternoon, get a good snuggle session in and then move outside for  the remainder of the session. If you decide this is the option you want to go with, we will talk to figure out the best plan of action for a successful session!

 Preparing For Your Session

In-Home Session Prep

The reason I love to shoot families in their own homes is because I truly believe in the importance of documenting people in their own space. There are a few things that will help you get the most out of your in-home session. I work entirely with natural lighting so it’s a good idea to open up all your curtains and turn off all artificial lights in the house before I arrive. If we need to adjust this when I arrive that is totally fine!

In most of my sessions we’ll shoot at least part of your session in your master bedroom. I highly recommend a light-coloured, plain duvet cover or comforter and some throw pillows. Not only does it look simple, clean and timeless but it reflects the light up on to your faces. Please understand that your decor and clothing are going to sway the overall feel and vibe of your images. Soft tans and whites will be much brighter and softer than deep reds. In the end, these are your images so you are welcome to choose whatever you would like!

I definitely don’t want you to worry about making sure your house is spotless and sparkling clean - it’s absolutely ok for your home to look lived in. It’s my job to make any home look gorgeous, but clutter doesn’t photograph well, especially lots of children’s toys. I will often ask if I can move little things like an alarm clock off a bed-side table, or moving remotes in the living room as they can be distracting in your images. I’m always open and tell clients if there is something larger that might make a photograph look better if it’s moved, and that is ok, it happens at every shoot!

Outdoor Session Prep

Preparing for an outdoor session requires a different kind of preparation than indoors. For your outdoor session, please bring with you a change of clothes just in case (kids have left soaking wet after a dip in the water many times!) Please also bring water, snacks, whatever you need to keep everyone happy! For the kiddos, allow them to bring along a favorite toy of choice.

If there are any other items you’d like to bring, like a blanket to lay on the ground to sit on, a guitar if someone in your family plays, or a favorite picnic snack. Have these items all prepared and ready to go! You may also want to bring along items like bug spray and sunscreen, just in case.

Rain game plan

No need to worry! If your shoot date gets rained out we’ll call it and reschedule. Keep in mind that we are in Maine, and as you know, the weather is always changing. While it’s tempting to check the forecast a week in advance, I don’t tend to make decisions till the day before and even sometimes not until hours before our session in case we get lucky last minute. The other option is to get adventurous, I have the skills to and protective gear to shoot in the rain so we can always splash around in the rain!

Tips & Tricks

A few pieces of wisdom from someone who has seen it all.

  • It’s best not to instruct your children to say “cheese” as it tends to transform a child’s naturally lovely face into a strange and strained smile. Instead, you know your kiddos best and know that one thing that ALWAYS makes them laugh, do that!

  • I find that while bribing your kids may work, it only works for a second. The problem is, that as soon as you set a prize at the end, kids tend to only focus on that. They start to think of our sessions as a chore to check off to get their reward and that is exactly what I don’t want.

  • The best thing you can do to prep the kids is to tell them we are going to have lots of fun - cause we will!

  • I often ask children to do something and on the way to doing it they do something even better, so please don’t feel the need to force them into something I’ve asked them to do. Chaos is beautiful to photograph, and children are the best chaos creators I know!

  • These ages can be tough! But don’t fret! Really we just go with the flow of the kiddos mood and see what they are feeling. At this age some kids may be shy and some may be on the move the whole time (hey, can ya blame them… they just learned to walk!) It’s all ok, we will embrace it!

  • It is totally fine and actually preferred to include your favorite four-legged family members in our sessions. I am a dog person myself (and they probably will be able to tell that)! They can lay in the background or some even enjoy being the center of attention, either is fine with me!

 Wardrobe & STYLING

I’m here to help!

Included with your session is full styling help, however much you would like! If these tips are enough for you, that’s great. If you want more help, I can do that! Start early before your session so we have time to email back and forth. If you want to find items in your closet, feel free to send me options and I will give you my best advice on what will work best. I can also send over links to new items for everyone in the session. For more ideas, check out the blog to see what my recent clients have worn or check out the link below to my pinterest.

What to Wear

I know picking out outfits can be majorly daunting. BUT it doesn’t have to be - and I’m here to help! Ultimately I want your images to focus on your love and connection between each other - not on what you’re wearing. I do have some recommendations to help you get there. I am by no means a fashion expert (typically in Birks and leggings) but I love to help you pick out something you feel amazing in! If you plan on ordering some key pieces I recommend ordering a month ahead of time!

  • We all know finding something for ourselves to wear is almost the hardest part, so start here with finding something you are comfortable in. Then build from that! Maternal pieces look great if you like a traditional or boho look (dresses, maxi skirts, maxi dresses, flowy tops, etc) If comfortable showing skin (backless, off the shoulder top/dress etc) can tell a more raw and real story of motherhood - but choosing a dress or top with flowy sleeves or skirt creates beautiful images as well.

  • Think about how you will all look together. If mom is wearing a maxi dress and bare feet, it’s not going to work if dad wears a suit and tie. Keep all of you in a similar style. The clothes that work best are those that don’t look forced, but rather like natural choices for the activity that you are doing.

  • White shirts and jeans have had their time. Pick three or four colors that you will all wear, and have different amounts of each color. We don’t want everyone to match perfectly or wear nothing but a single color, but we also don’t want everyone wearing totally different colors and patterns.

  • Go for earth tones and textures. These are the most classic and timeless. It’s also best to aim for layers in your clothing to provide visual interest and movement.

  • While flowy dresses or skirts are fantastic, in general, with pants and shirts aim for fitted clothing that is on the tighter end of what you would normally wear. Avoid baggy jeans or loose fitting shirts.

  • While the idea of outfits for the season may be appealing, our aim is to produce photos you can display and use year round! Unless you live on the North Pole, Christmas only really works once a year.
